Angela Rice's new Easter-themed cantata is full of melodies that are at once both infectious and deeply moving. The libretto, a combination of scripture and original text by the composer, includes Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd..."), The Lord's Prayer, and the traditional "Hail Mary," as well as several other centerpieces of the New Testament. While it culminates in the death and ressurection of Jesus, the work's universal message of love makes it easy to perform at any time of the year.

Joseph Baber (b.1937) spent a number of years in Japan as principal violist of the Tokyo Philharmonic. His mentors included such 20th-century icons as Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Howard Hanson, with whom Baber studied at the Eastman School of Music. HIs first three operas (Frankenstein, Rumpelstiltskin and Samson and the Witch) were collaborations with famed novelist John Gardner, and his fourth opera, River of Time, tells the story of the young Abraham Lincoln. We are honored and excited that Baber is writing his fifth opera for us!
